HIVE SHOW-001

March 2019 • Provo, Utah

This show explores perceived dichotomies in culture, art, and religion.

Émile Durkheim, a turn-of-the-century French Sociologist, theorized that the dichotomy of sacred and profane was instrumental in the function of religions. When strict boundaries are drawn, concepts, practices, and places can be elevated (or condemned) to a greater extent than they could be in a nebulous soup. The sacred and profane do not necessarily correlate to the dichotomy of good and evil, but are related somewhat closer to the concept of the natural and supernatural.

Some participants in this exhibition question where the lines are drawn, while others question if such boundaries even exist. At what point does high art become cheap entertainment? Where does godhood begin?
